A great human being, who became a guide for the lives of Turkmen with his divan, was born in Ajighowshan village of Turkmensahra 278 years ago. His divan had not just been confined to reviving and reforming the language of his people and bestowing the most profound poems to them. His divan had also brought up the biggest problems of Turkmen world into discussion and yielded deep thoughts and proper remedies. He is such a great poet that he had written the following in the 18th century when Turkmens were living in a fragmented, stateless and disconnected way:
Tekeh, Yomout, Goklan, Yazir, Khalili
May we be the subjects of a single state
If Turkmens had taken heed of Magtymguly’s statements at that time, it is no doubt that tree nations “Turkmenistan, Iran and Afghanistan†would not be asunder and disjointed under separate states. They would not have to bear today’s oppressions and adversities.
Magtymguly had emphasized the breadth of Turkmens’ geography and had written:
Between Jeyhun and Caspian
Blows the Turkmen wind over the desert
We can find thousands of valuable political, social, ethical and philosophical sayings in his poems. Taking into account classical literature of Turkic speaking nations, Mr Bartold, a Russian Expert on the East, states in his researches that: It is only Turkmen people who have a great national poet as Magtymguly among Turkic nations.
Yes, Magtymguly is the greatest literary figure of Turkmens and he is the greatest teacher in the history of Turkmen people. None of the literary and political figures among Turkmens can be a substitute for him. Today, Magtymguly has become a national symbol of Turkmens. The last week of Ordibehesht month is known as Magtymguly Festival in Turkmensahra and Turkmenistan, and he is commemorated on those days.
Magtymguly’s tomb is located in Aqtoqay village. On the last day of Magtymguly week, tens of thousands of Turkmens loving him, gather around his tomb. Having been horrified by Turkmen people’s alliance and their union of hearts, the Islamic Republic is trying to diminish the number of participants by creating a cloak-and-dagger atmosphere in order to control the ceremonies held in various cities of Turkmensahra and to put them under an official pattern. However, Magtymguly has such a place in the hearts of this people that it is not possible to put these ceremonies under a certain pattern. Turkmens are organizing splendid and crowded ceremonies in Turkmensahra with a heartfelt enthusiasm and they are once more stating their devotion to Magtymguly’s great ideals.
As the Turkmensahra Liberation Organization, we pay homage to the memory of Tukmens’ national symbol Magtymguly Pyragy, and we wish for all Turkmens and for those who love Turkmen literature and culture to have a happy Magtymguly week.
With the hope that Magtymguly’s national objectives become a reality.
