Police violently dispersed the protesters of the Public Chamber in the center of Baku, close to the Nizami monument park and the surrounding area.
The opposition had intended meeting at 13:00, to make a procession to the building of the Baku Mayor’s Office and hold a rally demanding provision of the freedom of assembly.
However, as soon as the protesters had gathered and tried to start the action, chanting Freedom, the police pounced on them and began to severely beat and arrest the people.
Police detained literally anyone whom they thought to be a potential participant in the rally, including passers-by.
The detained persons were put in police cars and taken away, Turan reported from the scene.
Nevertheless, the opposition continued to protest in other places. A few hundred meters away – in Fountain Square – the opposition held a small rally, where spoke Shirinbaji Rzayeva – one of the Baku residents, whose property rights were violated.
She said that she was not political, but the government forcibly engaged her in this. Her son was arrested on trumped-up charges of possession of drugs. This happened after Shirinbaji Rzaeva sharply criticized Ilham Aliyev at the opposition rally on April 22.
“Down with this corrupt regime!” – chanted Rzayeva, followed by applause. After that, the opposition moved along Nizami Street, chanting anti-government slogans. Police suppressed the action and beat everyone in their way. They even injured a schoolboy on the head.contact
