Turkey responded harshly against the Greek Cypriot Parliament Speaker, who voiced baseless criticisms against Turkey, at the World Conference of Speakers of Parliament.
Turkish Parliament Speaker Åžahin said, “Turkish Cypriots were and will continue to be on the island. Solution lies in the acceptance of this fact.”
Greek Cypriot Parliament Speaker Marios Garoyian accused Turkey of violating human rights and occupation in the island at the World Conference of Speakers of Parliament in Geneva, Switzerland.
Taking the floor for the second time, Turkish Parliament Speaker Åžahin said Garoyian is misstating the facts and handling the issue one-sidedly by ignoring the Turkish Cypriots in the island.
Noting Turkish military presence in the island rests on 1960 international agreements, Åžahin said 1960 Cyprus state was a federal partnership between Turkish and Greek Cypriots set up by London and Zurich agreements.
Saying Greek Cypriots attempted to rule out this partnership by 1963 bloody Christmas incidents; Åžahin said Greek Cypriots tried to annex the island for the second time in 1974.
Åžahin underlined that Turkey had no chance but to carry out its international obligations as a guarantor state.
“Turkish army was the single deterrent factor to put an end to repeating tragedies in the island since 1974. Peace has been prevailing in the island for 36 years now. We always supported a fair, lasting and a comprehensive solution, based on political equality and bi-communal society”, said Åžahin.
With his statements Garoyian sided with those who are uncompromising, Mr. Åžahin added.
“Turkish Cypriots were and will continue to be on the island. Solution lies in the acceptance of this fact”, The Turkish Parliament Speaker said.trt
