A top European Commission official expressed support for Turkey’s European Union bid yesterday and criticized the union for not giving the country a clear path toward membership.

“The European Union has been giving conflicting messages to Turkey for years,” European Commission Vice-President Günter Verheugen said, according to Deutsche Welle Turkish. “This raises questions about whether the union is genuine toward the Turks.”

Noting that Turkey was providing the security for the southeastern flank of the European continent, Verheugen said the country’s accession to the EU was extremely important for Europe’s defense and energy security. He added that he was not surprised by the enthusiasm toward EU reforms in Turkey.

EU should be clear

Verheugen said the EU’s biggest political mistake was its inability to offer Turkey a clear, consistent and credible path toward membership, adding that the EU should be giving this message to Ankara: “It is up to you whether you will become a member or not. We are ready for you when you fulfill the requirements.”

Stressing that it was not possible for the EU to provide conveniences or impose extra conditions on Turkey, Verheugen said that the EU negotiation process had already brought about a major political and social transformation in the country.hurriyet
