Turkey: March 18 Canakkale Naval Victory Day

. “More than 250 thousand martyrs, who sacrificed themselves in Çanakkale to defend our independence against enemies trying to erase our nation from the pages of history, are our heroes that will live beyond history, just like our great poet Mehmet Akif says.”

Chief of General Staff General İlker Başbuğ said:


State dignitaries released messages for this significant day.

President Abdullah Gül reminded that the resistance Turkish people showed against the powerful armies of the world in Çanakkale affected the power balance of the world and changed the course of history to a different direction.

In his message, Gül said:

“Without a doubt, one of the most significant results of the Çanakkale Wars, was that the founder of our Republic Mustafa Kemal, stepped onto the stage of history with his genious and great leadership capabilities. Mustafa Kemal Atatürk assumed critical tasks in the battles, and played a great role on the path to victory.”

Speaker of the Turkish Grand National Assembly Mehmet Ali Åžahin said:

“More than 250 thousand martyrs, who sacrificed themselves in Çanakkale to defend our independence against enemies trying to erase our nation from the pages of history, are our heroes that will live beyond history, just like our great poet Mehmet Akif says.”

Chief of General Staff General İlker Başbuğ said:

“The victory Mehmetçik won in Çanakkale, crying out the motto “Dardanelles impassable” to the whole world, is the clearest example of what we can venture when the issue is motherland.” General BaÅŸbuÄŸ said Mehmetçik moves from the understanding that “martyrdom is the highest and final rank”, and that understanding paves the path to new victories.”

Nationalist Movement Party leader Devlet Bahçeli said “When the matter comes to national defense Turkish people can risk everything.”trt
