Israeli Ambassador to Turkey has been summoned to Turkish Foreign Ministry for an explanation over Israel’s recent statements criticizing Turkey, the state run Anatolia News agency said.
At a meeting with Foreign Ministry Undersecretary Feridun Sinirlioglu, Israeli envoy Gabby Levy was asked about recent statement issued by Israeli Foreign Ministry that strongly criticized Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan after his remarks over Israeli offensive against Gaza, the Turkish daily Today’s Zaman said.
Turkish diplomats also expressed uneasiness over media reports after Turkish Ambassador in Tel Aviv Oğuz Çelikkol’s meeting with Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon and also the statement made by Israeli Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Yossi Levy.
At a meeting with Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri the same day in Ankara, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan criticized Israel for its offensive against Gaza and for violating UN resolutions. He said Israel never denied that it possessed nuclear weapons, calling on the five permanent members of the UN security Council to be fair, and follow up on nuclear weapons of Israel, just like they did with Iran.
In response to Erdoğan’s remarks, Israeli Foreign Ministry said in a statement that Israel respected Turkey and was interested in continued normal relations between the two states, but expected the Turkish side to reciprocate with a similar approach towards Israel. However the statement comprised unfortunate expressions accusing Turkey of sending anti-Israeli messages.
Accordingly, Turkish Foreign Ministry expressed sorrow on Tuesday concerning Israeli statement in response to Turkey’s criticisms and warnings on Israeli policies toward Palestine.
Foreign Ministry released a statement on January 12 and denounced the expressions used in Israeli statements previously released regarding Turkey’s criticisms. Expressing sorrow concerning the Israeli statement, Foreign Ministry said the said-expressions do not comply with history and social memory of the Jewish people. The unfortunate expression that falsifies facts was defined to have been “unjust against history”.
Foreign Ministry’s statement reiterated that Turkey’s foreign policy toward the region aims at ensuring stability, security and peace for all peoples of the region; therefore prioritizing peaceful means and dialogue rather than disproportionate use of power and isolation of civilians.
The statement also reminded a historical fact that Turkish people have always bestowed hand on Jewish people when they needed, diversifying a deep rooted relationship based on mutual respect and solidarity, adding that allegations of anti-Semitism has no ground.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Erdoğan responded to Israel’s diplomatically inconvenient move.
Stating that the Turkey will not be bound by the fact that the Israeli government is a coalition, Erdoğan said that they cannot tolerate the statements.
Speaking before leaving for Russia, Premier Erdoğan noted that Turkey has tolerated the Israeli people for ages, and any hostile act will find its response.trt
