Taliban Attack Kills Afghan Governor

Afghan police say a remote-controlled bomb has killed the governor of eastern Logar province and three others.
The Taliban claimed responsibility for Saturday’s attack in the town of Paghman, about 20 kilometers from Afghanistan’s capital, Kabul. It killed Governor Abdullah Wardak, his driver and two bodyguards.
A local police official, General Mustafa Khan, says Wardak was in his vehicle and on his way to work, when the bomb exploded near his home. Police say this was the second assassination attempt against the Logar governor in recent months.
Wardak was a former cabinet minster in President Hamid Karzai’s government and led Afghan forces alongside U.S. troops during the invasion of Afghanistan in 2001.
He is the second Afghan governor to be assassinated in recent years.

In other developments, Afghanistan’s Interior Ministry said three men were arrested for allegedly giving false information to international troops, leading to U.S. air strikes that killed civilians in Azizabad village last month.
Afghan and U.N. officials say the strikes killed 90 civilians, most of them children. The U.S. has said between five and seven civilians were killed, but has since agreed to review its investigation.voa
