A senior South Korean official says he expects Afghanistan’s Taleban militants to release their remaining seven South Korean hostages Thursday, bringing an end to a six-week crisis.

Wednesday, the Taleban freed 12 South Korean hostages, 10 women and two men, in separate groups, and they were handed over to Red Cross officials in central Afghanistan, close to the city of Ghazni.
The hostages were freed after the Taleban and South Korean officials reached a deal under which Seoul agreed to withdraw 200 of its non-combat troops from Afghanistan by year’s end, which it had already planned to do, and suspend missionary work in the country.
Several Afghan politicians have criticized the deal saying it would encourage more kidnappings in the future.
U.S. State Department Spokesman Tom Casey welcomed the release of the hostages. He also dismissed suggestions the deal between South Korea and the Taleban would give the militants political legitimacy.
Taleban militants abducted 23 South Koreans as they traveled by bus to southern Afghanistan as part of a Christian aid group in July. Later that month, the militants executed two male hostages, and weeks later, released two female hostages.
The Taleban is also holding German engineer Rudolf Blechschmidt. He was one of two engineers and five Afghans kidnapped by the Taleban in central Afghanistan last month. The other German engineer was shot to death by his captors after he collapsed.voa
