Dear Mr Ahmed Shaheed,
We are writing to update you on the latest development of the events in Azerbaijani cities in North Western Iran, ahead of the expected mass demonstration tomorrow Saturday 10 September 2011. Based on reports and amateur videos received from the second week of the protests, two were killed in Urmia and one in Tarbiat street of Tebriz on 2 September 2011(bodies were taken away by security forces). Video evidences of sever beating of detainees on the streets and stationing of snipers on roof top of high rise buildings, along with mass arrests are indications of employing Syrian style crack down by Iranian regime. Ms Feranek Ferid , a well known Azerbaijani journalist and feminist is among the hundreds of detainees. She was badly beaten by security forces of Iran and is in a critical condition. Despite difficulties in internet connections, in and around the cities where demonstrations are held, black out and threatening of the families of dead/injured/detainees, to refrain from reporting to human rights organisations, the names of the following detainees were obtained through reliable sources:
1. Said Sadigi (Urmia City)
2. Abulfat Mezahirpur (Urmia City)
3. Rza Jafari (Urmia City)
4. Hesen Alipur (Urmia City)
5. Jelil Hesenzade (Urmia City)
6. Memedrza Alizade (Urmia City)
7. Rza Huseynpur (Urmia City)
8. Hesen Memedzade (Urmia City)
9. Jefer Mashalazade (Urmia City)
10. Ekber Muradi (Urmia City)
11. Nusret Huseynpur (Urmia City)
12. Mujtaba Velipur (Urmia City)
13. Hesem Molayi (Urmia City)
14. Memeh Chinqralu (Urmia City)
15. Behzad Nojavan (Urmia City)
16. Ramin Shikhbeglu (Urmia City)
17. Feranek Ferid (Tebriz)
18. Said Ibrahimzade (Tebriz)
19. Memed Ehmedi (Tebriz)
20. Salih Gulmemedi (Tebriz)
21. Resul Bedeli (Tebriz)
22. Meherrem Khalqi (Merend City)
23. Seher Khalqi (Meherrem’s wife in Merend City)
24. Meysem Azadi (Tehran)
25. Mehrdad Keremi (Zenjan)
26. Abbas Lisani (Ardebli)
Another worrisome development is that three members of a family were executed in one of the flash point cities called Urmia. It is not the first time that Iranian regime is resorting to executing prisoners whom were convicted in Iranian medieval courts. Iranian Semi official Mehr news agency (2 July 2011) , reported in Ardebil city of Southern Azerbaijan that Gholamali Rezaii, the prosecutor general of the province, announced death sentences of 40 convicted drug dealers. He called them, enemies of Islam, the state and official identity of the country and will be soon executed. These convicted prisoners may well be mass executed during the unrest to spread fear in Southern Azerbaijani society.
Once again we urge you to monitor the human rights violation in Southern Azerbaijan (North Western Iran) tomorrow and in coming weeks, as it seems that environmentalists will be staging further demonstrations on Saturdays until their demands are met. Irainan security forces are still talking through barrel of guns and ignoring the call of conservationists to revive Urmia Lake.
Yours faithfully
Chairman of SAHRW
Direnc Minelli
