Russian troops advanced 40 km (25 miles) from separatist Abkhazia to the town of Senaki inside Georgia proper on Monday, the Georgian Interior Ministry said, APA reports quoting Reuters.
There is US-based military base in Senaki. Shota Utiashvili, Spokesman for Interior Ministry said that Russian peacekeepers and Abkhazian separatists had entered Khurcha village of Zugdidi Town. Abkhazian side declined the information.
Russian Defense Ministry announced that “operations†were carried out in Senaki Region.
Source from the Ministry stated that second infantry brigade of Georgian Armed Forces placed in Senaki.
“Operations aimed to prevent new attack of Georgian artillery against peacekeepers of Russia and South Ossetia†said in a report. The source stressed that they aimed to prevent mobilization of reservists.apa
