Russia’s Gazprom delays cutting gas deliveries to Belarus

Russia will delay halving gas supplies to Belarus by one week after Minsk made a first $190 million payment out of its $456 million debt to Russia for gas deliveries.
Russian gas giant Gazprom cancelled a threatened cut-off of gas supplies to Belarus on Friday after receiving the first payment to clear nearly half a billion dollars in debt, Gazprom said in a statement.
“Today Beltransgaz has made the first payment for a significant part of the debt it owes Gazpromm… The decision has been made to put off a reduction in gas supplies to Belarussian consumers,” the company said.
Gazprom had threatened to cut gas supplies to Belarus by 45 percent from Friday due to 456 million dollars (333 million euros) in overdue debt, rattling European consumers who receive 20 percent of their Russian gas via Belarus.
Interfax quoted Belarussian gas pipeline operator Beltransgaz as saying the company had paid 190 million dollars to Gazprom, while Gazprom said it expected “full repayment of the debt within one week, and prompt payment of 100 percent of current gas bills.”
The crisis was the latest stand-off between Russia and one of its ex-Soviet neighbors to raise European fears of supply cuts.echoroukonline
