. | Persian editorial staffs do fully cooperate with the Mullah regime of Teheran in order to close the eyes for the existence of the Azerbaijan people in Southern Azerbaijan (in the northern part of Iran). To the western media which have Persian programs
In countries like Iran, China etc. the western medias broadcasting in the before mentioned countries do have an important impact on those who fight for democracy and human rights for their own countries.
Especially the radio broadcasts often were their only connection to other people. When hearing their fight against oppression in the radio they felt that they did not fight in vain, the world knew about them. That feeling alone gave them new energy and courage to pursuit their fight.
Unfortunately, over time, the staffs in the mentioned media changed and now consisted of people who wanted freedom for their own people, but not for others. Especially in the Persian programs have we again and again met the Persian chauvinism hiding behind Persian democrats and advocates for human rights.
Persian editorial staffs do fully cooperate with the Mullah regime of Teheran in order to close the eyes for the existence of the Azerbaijan people in Southern Azerbaijan (in the northern part of Iran). The fight of the Azerbaijan people against oppression and their struggle to preserve their cultural values are constantly ignored by the Persian editorial staffs.
They do broadcast programs on other Iranian opposition movements, and they do interview the leaders of the Iranian opposition and ordinary people. That is how they maintain a democratic surface.
The Azerbaijan movement is growing stronger each day. The Persian editorial staffs have never done any interviews with them. The Azerbaijan people represent the largest ethnic group in Iran.
About 35 million Azerbaijans live in Southern Azerbaijan. Every year countless Azerbaijan activists are arrested, though innocent they are being convicted, tortured and killed. The Iranian army is being brought into action against defenceless Azerbaijan civilians. Azerbaijan is boiling the year around, but very seldom we hear anything in the Persian media. If they do bring anything at all, it is always when the events are over and after the Persian military has gained control through bloody actions.
We can give an example of how the Persian editorial staffs have reacted after the latest events in Southern Azerbaijan.
Recently it was the anniversary of the caricatures printed in Teheran which mocked the Azerbaijan identity and culture. The Azerbaijan people wanted to demonstrate against them. But Iranian forces did quickly attack the people and arrested hundreds of civilians who are now imprisoned awaiting their trial.
Never have we heard a word in the Iranian radio programs. When it was over and people were put in prison a few Iranian programs very shortly commented on the events, even after Iranian papers did write about them.
The source of the Persian editorial staffs in Southern Azerbaijan is Peyman Pakmehr, an utmost pro-persian journalist. He goes strongly against the Azerbaijan peoples struggle to preserve their identity and culture. His opinions are always biased. He tries to conceal the national movement in Southern Azerbaijan.
BBC, VOA, France-RF1, Deutsche Welle (DW-World.DE/Persian) etc. are big and well known media. Their work ought to support democracy and human rights. But as long as the chauvinist Persian occupation continues the Iranian people and the world do not have a real chance of knowing what goes on in Southern Azerbaijan.
We do hope that the boards in the above mentioned media will take this letter in consideration and employ real democrats in their editorial staffs.
Yours sincerely;
Shahin Ostajloo
Spokesman for South Azarbaijan (Iran) Human Rights (S.A.H.R)
