Finally, as you would recall from our meeting on 10 January 2007 with your Special Raporteurs, we provided contact details of a number of activists and some of those prisoners of conscience who have been released on bail or with suspended prison terms. We also gave you telephone numbers of those activists who are knowledgeable on Mr. Leysanli’s situations. We therefore request your kind attention to this issue by being active on learning directly for yourselves on the ordeal of Mr. Leysanli’s family and also by facilitating the intervention of the UN representative in Iran on the situation of Mr. Leysanli.

Mr. Abbas Leysanli
Prisoner of conscience
Dear sir/madam,
Re : THE GRAVE CONDITIONS OF MR. ABBAS LEYSANLI IN HUNGER STRIKE
We have been providing you regular bulletins on Mr Abbas Leysanli since 2 January 2007, who is on hunger strike in Erdebil prison. This protagonist of the national and human rights of the nation of Southern Azerbaijan resorted to hunger strike as the last remaining measure for safeguarding his statutory rights.
Our authentic information confirms that despite Mr. Leysanli’s vulnerable situation, the authorities are mounting the application of various pressures on him. Whilst he is vulnerable by being imprisoned and under hunger strike, the pressure on his family is also mounting by preventing his wife to campaign for him.
Now after being nearly one month in vulnerability through hunger strike, Mr. Leysanli’s condition has been deteriorating by suffering from a number of illnesses. We wish to inform that according to our accurate information, his ongoing conditions are conducive to the risk of death. As a support to our independent information, we are also attaching you the campaign by Amnesty International as an urgent action issued on 19 January 2007 (MDE 13/004/2007).
This is a critical moment and we will appreciate if you use your mandates in safeguarding the human rights of Mr. Abbas Leysanli.
Finally, as you would recall from our meeting on 10 January 2007 with your Special Raporteurs, we provided contact details of a number of activists and some of those prisoners of conscience who have been released on bail or with suspended prison terms. Thanking you in advance for your care.
Yours faithfully,
