Premier ErdoÄŸan receives Mahmoud Abbas

Paying a two-day visit to Turkey, Head of Palestinian National Authority Mahmoud Abbas delivered a speech at the Ambassadors’ Conference on Wednesday.

Tension with Egypt which stopped the aid convoy to enter into Gaza was also seen in Ankara. Egyptian Ambassador to Ankara Alaa al-Hadidi was not present among the Arab countries’ envoys during greeting ceremony for Abbas. Egyptian sources defended that the ambassador had another program to attend.

Speaking at the conference, Palestinian Head of State Mahmoud Abbas informed Turkish diplomats on the latest developments of the Palestine issue.

Abbas began his speech by thanking Turkey for its support given to the Palestinian people and for the efforts to reach a reconciliation between the Palestinian groups.

During the meeting held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Mahmoud Abbas answered the questions of the participant ambassadors. He said that Turkey has always shown its support for the Palestinian people by playing a leading role.

Stating that they are ready to have peace talks with Israel without any preconditions, Abbas asked Israel to abide by the international laws.

Saying that the Palestinian people wish to live proud in their own independent and secure state, Abbas noted that peace in the Middle East would reduce tensions all over the world, and added that the Arab Peace Initiative is a big opportunity for Israel.

Regarding a reconciliation between the two Palestinian groups, the Head of Palestinian National Authority said that elections could be held on June 28 if Hamas also accepts and that elections will be open to any international observation.

Underlining the human tragedy in Gaza, Abbas said that Israel could continue blockade forever if we do not eliminate the reasons of embargo for Israel does not care about the hungry.

Mahmoud Abbas was later received by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip ErdoÄŸan.

Middle East peace process and reconciliation efforts between the Palestinian groups were the focus of the meeting.

Stating that the Palestinian case is also their problem, Prime Minister ErdoÄŸan said that the Palestinians must resolve the conflicts among them in order to reach a solution in Palestine. He added that the Palestinian issue is of key importance for the entire world as it is the problem of humanity.

Palestinian Head of State Mahmoud Abbas thanked Premier ErdoÄŸan for defending Palestine on the international platforms and touched upon the obstacles before the talks between Palestine and Israel.

Reminding the issue of settlements, Abbas shared statistical information with ErdoÄŸan showing the settlement change on the Palestinian lands.

He said that Arab and Muslim districts in Jerusalem are being judaized and Israel still seizes Muslim settlements.

Mahmoud Abbas also noted that Israel imposes on the Palestinians to accept Israel as a Jewish state and that his people opposes to the imposition since it will make the ground for evicting non-Jewish people from the Israeli lands if the Palestinians undersigned such a condition, adding that Israel’s aim is to establish an unmixed Jewish state.
