Azerbaijan took over rotating presidency at the UN Security Council.
The top issues remain Syria, the Middle East and the ongoing conflicts in Africa, Azerbaijan’s Ambassador to UN Agshin Mehdiyev told United Nations Radio. He says Azerbaijan will hold a special session on the prevention of international terrorism through cooperation and hopes Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev will chair that debate. He also says the situation in the Balkans as well as conflict prevention will be part of Azerbaijan’s priorities for May.
The UN Security Council will focus attention on the Middle East problem, non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, as well as the prevention of international terrorism.
Ambassador said he hoped that the UN Security Council will save its solidarity to support Kofi Annan’s six-point plan on Syria. According to Mehdiyev, Iranian problem will not be on agenda in May.apa
