LUCI calls for international support to help savein Lake Urmu

There will be campaigns in more than 15 cities around the world to raise awareness on dying of Lake Urmia and to ensure that the voice of Azerbaijani’s is heard. |

On May 21, 2012, hundreds of Iranian Azerbaijanis in North West of Iran took on the streets of Urmia and Tabriz cities in spite of heavy military atmosphere. The protesters were demanding Iranian government to take meaningful actions to prevent socio-environmental catastrophe which will be caused by drying of Lake Urmia. Protesters in both cities were attacked by Iranian riot police who used baton and tear gas to disperse the crowd and arrested tens of participants. The whereabouts of detainees who were transferred by paddy wagons remain unknown.
We, Lake Urmia Conservation Society, in collaboration with several other Azerbaijani groups in support of protesters in Azerbaijani cities in Iran, will take action on June 5 (World Environment Day).
