Dear Fellow Azerbaijanis,
Today Azerbaijani people across the world have demonstrated high level of solidarity and vigilance on the status of the Lake Urmia., Many groups and organizations from different parts of the world left their differences behind and collaborated to help raise the awareness of the Lake Urmia and stop the environmental crisis.
We are proud to announce that today multiple events were organized on the issue of the Lake Urmia in more than 10 cities around the world. This would not happen without support and assistance from many Azerbaijani organizations, groups and individuals. We would like to take this opportunity and extend our appreciation to all groups which supported the Initiative and in particular the following organizations and individuals who demonstrated tremendous enthusiasm to raise awareness of the environmental crisis:
• Alberta Azerbaijani Cultural Society
• Azerbaijani American Cultural Association of Florida
• Azeri Turk Canadian Association
• Azerbaijan Society of Maine
• Amnesty South Azerbaijan
• Association for Defence of Azerbaijani Political Prisoner in Iran
• South Azerbaijani Human Rights Centre
• South Azerbaijan Independence Party
• Azerbaijani-Canadian scientist and politician Dr. Reza Moridi
• Our national singer: Memmed Rza Tabrizli
Today, we also received good news that hundreds of Azerbaijani activists went on the streets of Tabriz inside Iran to demonstrate and demand the Iranian government to take action. It was another sign of solidarity and unity between Azerbaijanis around the world and those living inside Iran.
As a result of our collaborative actions, the Iranian government has started taking the matter seriously. As reported by the Khorasan news agency, Mr. Mohammadi, the head of Iranian state general inspection organization gave a speech at the University of Urmia today, and acknowledged the need for the government to take action. However, Mr. Mohammadi again put all responsibility on the communities living around the lake. He stated: “if the experts in the province believe that a crisis of Lake Urmia is so serious, then we should start from the province itself; province should stop mismanagement of the funds and dedicate some of the budget to solve Lake Urmia problemâ€. He also added: “the province should not be waiting for the national budget and if there is any crisis they should assign some of the province’s budget for this issueâ€.
This shows that Azerbaijani people are on their own in this crisis and the only solution is unity of all Azerbaijanis around the world to support their brothers and sisters who suffer dare consequences of the drying Lake Urmia.
Lake Urmia Conservation Institute is committed to be a global voice of Azerbaijan in the Lake Urmia subject and will continue to represent Azerbaijani people on international arena.
