Irish vessel refused entry to Turkish waters

The LÉ Aoife, one of Ireland’s top naval vessels, was unable to pass through the Turkish Straits last weekend and stranded in Mediterranean waters.

The incident apparently occurred after Irish authorities failed to give 15 days advance notice to Turkish officials, a prerequisite to have access to the Turkish Straits under the Montreux Convention of 1936. The naval vessel was due to pay a courtesy and diplomatic visit to Bulgarian and Romanian ports but unexpectedly ended up in Crete.

It is understood that (Irish) officials failed to apply for the requisite authorization in time and that they gave notice upon arrival in the Dardanelles. That was very late, said officials from the Turkish Foreign Ministry.turkishdailynews
