Iranian state media say President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has announced that Iran now has over 3,000 uranium-enriching centrifuges at its Natanz plant, and that a new series is being installed each week. Iran has always said the installation of 3,000 centrifuges was a key medium-term goal in its nuclear programme.

The International Atomic Energy Agency however said in its latest report that Iran had fewer than 2,000 centrifuges working in Natanz and that around 650 were installed but not yet operating.

Tehran is continuing with its atomic programme despite two sanctions resolutions imposed by the United Nations Security Council.
