A policeman was murdered by terrorists last night – bringing new turmoil to Northern Ireland.
He was shot in the head in his car as he attended a reported incident near a school and drove into an ambush.
A second officer is believed to have been wounded in the attack in Craigavon, Co Armagh, which Republican sources blamed on the Real IRA.
The dissident group murdered soldiers Patrick Azimkar, 21, and Mark Quinsey, 23, in Antrim on Saturday.
Police board member Dolores Kelly, of the nationalist SDLP, pleaded for calm and said:” We’re tonight staring into the abyss. I would appeal to people to pull back.” And Sinn Fein’s Alex Maskey said:” We have had yet another awful tragedy. We would like to send our condolences to his family and express our disgust and anger that this happened 36 hours after the death of the soldiers.”
Basil McCrea, who also sits on the policing board, added:” We are getting into something completely disgraceful and it has to be stopped at the source. It has all the hall marks of a terrorist attack. We must stand together.” Last night republican sources pointed the finger at the Real IRA’s so-called North Armagh Brigade.
A source said:” This is connected to Saturday’s attack.” In hardline towns like Craigavon and Lurgan the dissidents were itching to attack police.” The murder drew condemnation from politicians across the political divide.
Ulster Unionist deputy leader Danny Kennedy said:” I utterly condemn this latest wicked and murderous attack by dissident republicans.” He insisted the people of Northern Ireland. were determined” to withstand any and every assault on the democratic institutions that have been in place for the last decade”.
He added:” We will not allow ourselves to be dragged back to a darker, bloodier world.” Alliance leader David Ford echoed their condemnation as he said:” I cannot comprehend the sheer evil of those involved. It was cowardly and despicable.”
