An İstanbul court ruled on Monday to order the police department to bring retired Gen. Yaşar Büykanıt, a former chief of General Staff, to the court by force in order to give testimony as a witness in a trial concerning a plot to overthrow the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) government.
The İstanbul 10th High Criminal Court, which is hearing the trial regarding the Sledgehammer Plan — an alleged coup plan against the government — in a hearing on Monday announced that the military had responded to a court request to summon Büyükanıt as a witness by saying he was no longer military staff following his retirement.
There are 365 suspects in the trial, 249 of whom are under arrest, pending trial. Forty-three of those under arrest were not in attendance at Monday’s hearing. The suspects are accused of having masterminded the Sledgehammer plan and instructing army personnel about the details of the plot in what is described by prosecutors as a “wargames scenario†at a 2003 seminar at an İstanbul barracks. Çetin DoÄŸan, the general who allegedly crafted the plot and Gen. Engin Alan were in attendance, as well as a military judge, Adm. Özden Örnek and Gen. Halil İbrahim Fırtına.
Judge Ali Efendi Peksak presided over the court on Monday. Sevilay Erkani Bulut, Melek Üçtepe, Bayram Tanrısever, Muhammet Tanju Poshor, Ahsen Süren and Hakan Gökden, all summoned as witnesses in the trial, also came to court on Monday.
Judge Peksak noted that the national police department will be notified to ensure that retired Gen. Büyükanıt attends the next session.
The court has also subpoenaed other officers, including those on active duty in the military, such as Col. Bekir Kalyoncu. A statement from the General Staff sent to the court in response to a query did not give any information about the officers.
Another witness the court subpoenaed in order to obtain a witness testimony is former Chief of General Staff Gen. İlker Başbuğ, who is currently in Silivri Prison on charges of involvement in a related coup plot.cihan
