Earthquakes Kill At Least 39 in Rwanda, DRC

Rwandan media say hospitals are struggling to cope with hundreds of people injured by the earthquakes.



Strong earthquakes in Africa’s Great Lakes region have killed at least 39 people and injured hundreds in Rwanda and the neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo.

The two largest quakes hit the Rwandan-Congolese border region several hours apart this Sunday morning as many people were in churches for Sunday services.

Rwandan officials say at least 34 people were killed and several hundred were injured in the southwest of the country as churches and homes collapsed. Rescuers are searching for survivors trapped in the rubble.

Rwandan media say hospitals are struggling to cope with hundreds of people injured by the earthquakes.

Authorities in the DRC reported at least five deaths in the Bukavu region of South Kivu province.

The United States Geological Survey says the first quake had a magnitude of six and the second had a magnitude of five.

The quakes happened in Africa’s western Great Rift Valley, which includes active seismic fault lines.voa
