On sentiments of a successful campaign, the main opposition Republican People’s Party, or CHP, has vowed to restructure and become a realistic alternative to the ruling party, which experienced a decrease in votes in Sunday’s local elections.

The party said the popular, former Istanbul mayoral candidate and CHP group deputy leader, Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, who increased votes for the party by around 10 percent in the city, would become a member of the Central Executive Board, or MYK. Also, according to new party legislation, group deputy leaders will be able to attend MYK meetings under the title of deputy party leader.

Former Ankara mayoral candidate Murat Karayalçın, another CHP figure who boosted party votes, will be given a more active role in the party. CHP leader Deniz Baykal cannot appoint Karayalçın as an MYK member because he is not a member of the Party Assembly but will offer him a position as a special adviser to the party leader.

CHP leader Deniz Baykal cannot appoint Karayalçın as an MYK member because he is not a member of the Party Assembly but will offer him a position as a special adviser to the party leader. Karayalçın, who was the leader of the Social Democratic People’s Party, or SHP, resigned from his post to enter the elections on the CHP’s ticket. Baykal is expected to offer CHP Istanbul deputy İlhan Kesici a special advisory role as well.

The first evaluation over restructuring will be made in the MYK meeting under Baykal’s guidance. Later, the Party Assembly will convene and discuss the new regulations that were adopted before Sunday’s elections. If the assembly puts the new legislation into effect, the current MYK will be dissolved. In line with the new legislation, the MYK will be composed of a party leader, a secretary general and at least 13 deputy leaders. Baykal will appoint the MYK members from among the assembly members. The CHP will also take action to increase its votes in the Southeast and in eastern and central Anatolia. According to the party roadmap, the CHP will include popular regional figures in the party administration.hurriyet
