Dear Mr Secretary General,
Islamic Republic of Iran in spite of being one of the signatories of the resolution A/RES/61/266, in clear breach of section “a†of article “25†, not only does not promote Azerbaijani Turkish -which is the mother tongue of tens of millions of Southern Azerbaijanis ( North Western Iran) – but also by banning education in their native language, has adopted the policy of forcible Farsification in pursue of the dream of a single ethnic state . Implementation of this illegal policy by Iranian system of governance has had disastrous affect on Azerbaijanis’ life, culture and language in Iran. Tens of millions of non-Persian population understandably have not been able to learn Farsi (the only official language in Iran) adequately, to use as the vital means of communication with state administrations, media, cultural centres, political organisations and even financial institutions.
A clear example of this is the infamous case of Sakina Mahamadi Ashtiyani whom were sentenced to death by stoning. She only comprehended what was read to her as the verdict in the court when she was returned to her cell and someone translated it into Turkish. Those who’ve managed to learn Farsi are being subjected to systematic racial abuse for simply having Turkish accent. Crystal clear form of this practice was portrayed in the racist cartoon of 2006, which triggered massive demonstrations throughout Southern Azerbaijan and ended with brutal suppression by murdering of nearly 50 demonstrators by Iranian security forces.
Farsification policy of Iranian system created a vivid portrait of racism in Iran, in order to speed up the assimilation process which consciously, impliedly or normatively is being practiced, from the governmental level to almost all sections of the Farsi speaking community.
We urge you to raise this issue with Iranian officials and exert pressure upon them to respect universal human rights of tens of millions of South Azerbaijanis and lift the ban on their mother tongue, recognize it as an official language and promote it in state schools in compliance with UN resolutions.
Yours sincerely,
Direnc Minelli
Chairman of South Azerbaijan Human Rights Watch
CC: United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.
