Release the imprisoned Iranian Azerbaijani writers and poets
Dear Prime Minister
Iran’s government assault on human rights and ethnic minorities continues, and the pace appears to be growing.
On 10 September 2008, became more prominent Azerbaijani poets and writers were arrested and jailed. In previous years, the Azerbaijani activists called for a boycott of the first day of school, with the proviso that the Azerbaijani children can be allowed to be educated in their own language. Arrests are part of the Iranian government’s efforts to pre-empt protests or boycotts, 23 September, which is the first school day in Iran.
Some of the arrested persons were released on bail after being questioned. The following persons are still in solitary confinement in Evin prison.
Alireza Serrafi, a civil engineer, journalist and cultural activist
Hassan Rashidi, an engineer, author and lecturer
Hassan Rahimi Bayat, a civil engineer, human rights activist
Mehdi Neimi, poet and university lecturer
Seid Mohammadi Mughanli, poet and journalist
The arrest of the Azerbaijani writers and poets in Iran is part of a campaign of repression directed against minority groups in Iran, including Arabs, Trkmans, Balouchis and Azerbaijan.
The undersigned call for the Danish government and the political parties in Denmark, will express their concern over the deteriorating human rights situation in Iran. And will also urge the Iranian regime to respect human rights and stop the attacks on ethnic minorities.
We call for the Iranian regime pressured to release the imprisoned Azerbaijani activists from jail.
A rapid response from the West will be a great help in the fight for human rights and democratic processes in Iran, and to prevent radicalization of ethnic conflicts and potential carnage in Iran.
