The strongest Azerbaijani organization in Ukraine, the Azerbaijani Congress, split last Sunday. This occurred after police and guards did not allow members of the organization that oppose Chairman Ograt Asadov to participate in a session of congress, TURAN’s correspondent in Kiev reported. The supporters of Akif Gulmamedov conducted their conference in a building of Ukraine’s Trade Unions. They condemned Azerbaijan’s State Committee for Work with the Diaspora. Representatives of the State Committee attended both conferences.
The Azerbaijani Congress of Ukraine functions in almost thirty regions of Ukraine. The conflict over leadership of the organization began in April of this year.
Even though Akif Gulmamedov was elected chairman by a majority, documents of the Congress were not given to him. When the next conference of the organization took place, Akif Gulmamedov and his supporters were not admitted to the conference. Therefore they accuse the leadership of Azerbaijan’s State Committee for deliberately causing this split and interfering in the Congress’s affairs.
