A Caspian Airlines passenger jet carrying 168 people has crashed in northwest Iran, killing all those on board, Iran’s state media has said.

According to Aljazeera, state television said the airliner was headed from Tehran, Iran’s capital, to Yerevan, the Armenian capital on Wednesday when it crashed near the city of Qazvin.

“All people aboard… the crashed plane are dead. The plane had 153 passengers and 15 crew members,” Mohammad Reza Montazer Khorasan, head of the disaster management centre at Iran’s health ministry, said.

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Iran’s president, has ordered the transport ministry to launch a probe into the disaster.

Witnesses said the plane exploded after it dropped of out of the sky, and television images showed a huge crater at the disaster site littered with debris of plane parts, shoes and clothes.

Reports of fire

“The passenger plane was completely destroyed and the wreckage was scattered everywhere,” IRNA news agency quoted Masoud Jafari Nasab, Qazvin’s police chief, as saying.

A local police officer was also quoted by Iran’s ISNA news agency as saying that some witnesses had reported that the plane was on fire in mid-air.

Armenian television reported that the crash was caused by an engine fire, but did not provide any sources.

Kieran Daly of Air Transport Intelligence told Al Jazeera the crash was “a devastating impact to the ground which suggests that either the aircraft was completely out of control and unflyable … or that for some reason the pilot flew inadvertently into the ground”.

He added that recovering the “black box” flight recording device would be crucial in helping to identify the cause of the crash.

“It may be the case that the pilot had said there was an existing fault with the aircraft that he was trying to handle which will point investigators to the cause.

Daly said Caspian Airlines had a safety record of “varying quality”.

“It has a good statistical record but because it has been around for such a short time and is so small it doesn’t say very much,” he said.

Previous crashes

Nasab said the Caspian Airlines Tupolev had crashed in farmland near the village of Janat Abad.

The airliner crashed 16 minutes after take-off from Tehran’s Imam Khomeini International airport – at 11:33am local time (0703 GMT).

The crash is one of Iran’s worst aviation disasters in years.

In December 2005, 108 people were killed when a Lockheed C-130 transport plane crashed into a foot of a high-rise housing block outside Tehran, the Iranian capital.

Twenty-nine people were killed in September 2006 when an airliner came off the runway after landing in the eastern city of Mashhad and burst into flames.

In November that year, a military plane crashed on takeoff at Tehran’s Mehrabad airport, killing all 39 people on board.

BayBak received a report from Southern Azerbaijan indicating that the crashed plane was carrying weapons and explosives to Armenia. After revealing Israel-Azerbaijani relations, Iran continued supporting Armenian terrorists by calling Armenia’s defense minister for a meeting in Tehran! Iran has supported Armenians before, during and after their invasion of Azerbaijani territory of Karabakh.

BayBak adds that the crashed plane was being spied by Israeli and US planes. They even had taken pictures and recorded video when being loaded on land. Regardless of Iranian officials claim of not being informed of any technical problem by pilot, the plane had scheduled to have an emergency landing in Tabriz or Zengan (in Southern Azerbaijan). The area of crash is in fire, waste area is covered with debris and burned bodies.
