Afghan President Hamid Karzai is condemning a U.S. operation in eastern Afghanistan he says killed 16 Afghan civilians.
The president’s announcement came Sunday as Afghan demonstrators in Laghman province began their second day of protests against the alleged civilian deaths.
The U.S.-led coalition in Afghanistan has opened an investigation into the overnight raid by coalition troops that ended early Saturday.
U.S.-led forces say they killed 15 militants, including a woman carrying a rocket-propelled grenade, after troops came under attack. But Afghan authorities have said the death toll could reach 22, with women and children among the victims.
Afghan officials are also investigating the incident.
U.S. military spokesman, Colonel Greg Julian, told the Associated Press that the people killed were shooting at troops.
Mr. Karzai said last week that he could no longer tolerate civilian deaths resulting from coalition military operations.
The Afghan president said that although he supports efforts to battle extremists in the country, the U.S. and other Western allies have not done enough to reduce the risk to civilians.voa
