The planned amendments in the Turkish constitution should include measures that aimed at enhancing the judicial independence, the Chief Judge of the Supreme Court of Appeals Hasan Gerceker said.

“We wish that the views of the judicial bodies are asked before making any amendments regarding judiciary and the amendments should be in line with these views… We believe that the amendments should be in a format that will enhance the independence of judiciary,” Gerceker told reporters in Ankara, the state-run Anatolian Agency reported.

Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan said Friday his government would make only partial constitutional amendments instead of creating a new constitution.

The planned constitutional amendment package expected to appear on the government’s agenda soon would only cover four areas, individual application rights and the laws on ombudsmen, political parties and elections.

Erdogan had earlier said his government would resume talks with the opposition on drafting a new civilian constitution following the March 29 local elections.

Turkey’s current Constitution is a product of a military junta that staged a coup in 1980. More than 30 percent of the original constitution through amendments packages by numerous governments.hurriyet
