Urgent Action: Torture/possible prisoners of conscience/medical concern about Sa’id Metinpour and his brother Elirza Metinpour

. In attempts to obtain a videotaped confession the authorities tortured him. On 28 August, the Ministry of Intelligence summoned and arrested his brother, Elirza Metinpour, who was also transferred to Evin prison and subsequently tortured. The brothers are not known to have been formally charged with any offence.

Atiye Taheri, Sa’id Metinpour’s wife, visited him on 17 December. She described his health as being very poor and said that he had lost a lot of weight and that much of his hair had fallen out. He has been

Explosion kills 17 in Istanbul (Photo)

. The explosion took place this morning in a 5 story building next door to the Sisecam Factory. 17 were killed and 40 were injured. Rescue workers and security officials are working recovering people from the building. Fire and rescue squads were sent to the explosion site.

. On 28 December, an 18-year-old Turkmen fisherman, Husamettin Khadivar, was killed by maritime security officers. He had been fishing without a license in the Caspian Sea off the city of Bandar-e Torkman. Three other fishermen taking part in the unauthorised fishing were arrested.

Ali Sahdi is released under conditions!

. He was released after an amnesty passed recently in Iran. Usually there is a law that allows a prisoner to be released after serving half of his prison term, but this law was not applied to Mr Shadi and he was kept in illegally.

Mr. Shadi will be sent to jail again because of another charges raised against him from Tabriz court. He is sentenced to serve 3 month and 1 day (could not be reviewed) and also to receive 50 lashes.
