UN body says Iran fails to meet deadline

The U.N. watchdog report showed the dispute can be solved by the IAEA, a senior Iranian nuclear official told Reuters.

“This report shows Iran has logical interaction with the agency based on the safeguards and it shows Iran’s nuclear issue can be resolved in the framework of the agency,” said the deputy head of Iran’s Atomic Energy

Ali Khodabakhshi (also known as Elyaz Yekanli) is a prominent activist for the cultural, social and political rights of the Azeri Turkish minority in Iran (who also refer to themselves as Iranian Azerbaijanis). He has been detained without charge since his arrest on 8 June. He has been tortured in detention in order to extract a ‘confession.’ He may be detained on account of his peaceful activities on behalf of the rights of the Azeri Turkish minority, in which case Amnesty International would consider

Church ‘alarm’ over cross caution

Last year 12 people were arrested for acts of “religious prejudice” after an Old Firm match during which Rangers player Fernando Ricksen was struck by an object.

The match took place days after an “historic” summit on sectarianism where it was agreed to work on a national plan to tackle the problem.

That event was attended by both Celtic and Rangers, who later in the year launched a project to tackle bigotry and sectarianism in the west of Scotland.

Iran inaugurates atomic project

Reports say the president toured the site of the plant, 190km (120 miles) south-west of the capital.

“Inaugurating the heavy-water production plant in Arak is a big step towards using Iran’s right, which means reaching peaceful nuclear technology,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid Reza Asefi was quoted as saying by state television.

Mehdi Babaei Ajabshir (known as Oxtay), a prominent Azerbaijani activist, was arrested on 11 July. He is detained incommunicado at an undisclosed location, believed to be either Tabriz prison or a Ministry of Intelligence detention facility in Tabriz, northwestern Iran, where he is at risk of torture. He may be detained on account of his peaceful activities on behalf of the rights of the Azeri-Turkish minority, in which case Amnesty International would consider him a prisoner of conscience.

UN plea for European peacekeepers

The UN has urged European countries to come forward to contribute more troops for the peacekeeping force in Lebanon.
