In 1995 broadcasting ministry of Iran had published a survey in which Turks were introduced as low level citizens when even being their neighbour was an embarrassment to other Iranian (Fars in particular, as the government believes all Iranians has to be Fars!). Azerbaijani students were angry about that act and they wrote to the officials expressing their concerns. They also wanted all of the staff who were involved in the act been arrested and punished. According to BayBak, the request by the students been ignored which in turn made the protest spread even wider. During the protest, Iranian police and plain clothed armed forces (Basiji) stormed the universities and attacked the peaceful protesters. The result was catastrophic where it left many dead and wounded, also hundreds of students been arrested and banned from university for life! Even at present, many of students on that time are under pressure from the government. Every year on 9th of May Azerbaijani students remembers that event and also draw a line between Azerbaijani students’ day and of that Iranian (or Fars) students day.
